NOTES on #42
"easy (thing) being (it) going (not) there (think)"
This piece was inspired by Peter Sellers guest appearance on The Muppet Show in its second season. One film Peter Seller's starred in was the '72 version of Alice in Wonderland. Another was I Love You, Alice B. Toklas, which references her Cookbook. Gertrude Stein was one of the first poets I fell in love with, and I chose to imitate her style for this prose poem/flash piece. Alice and Gertrude are a power couple in the literary world, and from what I know, the two were basically happily married. Sellers is a man of many faces in many of his most well-known films, and in his personal life, he was a known philanderer who had many rocky relationships. I used this to play with my characters Alice and Gertrude, or rather, Gertrude and Alice.
& This episode marks the second and last time that Kermit sing "Easy Bein'," by Joe Raposo. The first time it was performed was in Peter Ustinov's episode. Interestingly, Sellers replaced Ustinov in the role of Inspector Coloseau in Edward's Pink Panther.
& Dr. Strangelove is certainly an excellent film, but my favorite of Sellers is Being There, based off Jerzy Kosinski's excellent novel.
& Sellers famously tells Kermit in this episode, "I could never be myself ... You see, there is no me. I do
not exist ... There used to be a me, but I had it surgically removed."
